Do note that the sliding puzzle becomes pretty difficult quickly after extending the number of slides beyond 9 (3x3).
Show numbers on tiles
By default each tile has its own number, so you can see which tile belongs where based on the sliding puzzle grid.
To increase difficulty, try removing the numbers so that the puzzle player should figure out the sliding puzzle logic while sort of composing the image as a jigsaw in their head as well.
Show image preview as background
The player solving the sliding puzzle usually has an example background image to work with, so that the player can see which tile should go where.
The level of difficulty can be increased by removing this example image and include the 'jigsaw puzzle' effect of finding the right composition of the image.
Adjust the difficulty level
Another way to increase the difficulty, is by literally increasing the difficulty level setting. This setting determines how often the tiles in the sliding puzzle are 'shuffled' before showing it to the player.
Especially on bigger sliding puzzles, this will make it quite hard to untangle and so give food for thought for the hardcore puzzle player.
Allow players to challenge eachother
The sliding puzzle lends itself perfectly for setting up 1v1 challenges (1v1v1v1). Who can solve the puzzle the fastest?
Progress will be shown in real-time and the one who finishes first will be shown in a winner pop-up so no doubt will exist who won!
Use countdown timer
To set a solving time limit, you can add the countdown timer to the mix. The time on this timer can be anything you like (managed in seconds).
Once the countdown is finished and the player is not, the puzzle will be disabled for the active attempt, allowing a retry if you've enabled this.
