Why the example is built this way

Every gap has one right answer.
Take out words the grammar forces, like the preposition after a verb, not words of style or vocabulary. The check is exact, so a gap with two defensible answers marks someone wrong for being right.

Build the exercise around one pair learners mix up and give each its own sentence. The contrast is what the cloze is really about.

Word bank as a dropdown is off, so learners type and open the bank only when stuck. As a dropdown, every gap becomes a pick from a list and the exercise turns into matching.
