Dictation sentences
Short sentences read aloud, each built around one spelling pattern. Pupils write every sentence word by word, check it when they are done, and hear it up to three times.
When to use it
The dictation at the end of a phonics lesson, with the week's spelling pattern in every sentence. Spelling homework pupils can do on their own, because the sentences read themselves. A quick check of one pattern before the class moves on to the next.

Listen to each sentence and write it down, word by word. Every sentence has a word with -ight in it. You can hear each sentence three times.

Why the example is built this way

One pattern, easy words around it.
Every sentence has a word with -ight in it, ten different ones in eight sentences, and every other word is one pupils can already spell. That keeps the dictation about the pattern. Pupils write the words; the full stops are already on the page, and capitals are not marked.

Three listens, like in class.
A sentence plays by itself, and pupils can play it twice more: once to listen, once to write, once to check. With answers checked after each line, nothing is marked until the whole sentence is written, and a misspelled word then shows its right spelling above the pupil's answer.

Or only the pattern words.
Switch What players write to Marked words and star the -ight word in each sentence. Pupils still hear the whole sentence, but write only that word and see the rest. It is quicker, and closer to a spelling test than a dictation.
