Let them practise on their own Deconstruct the sentence

Noun, verb or adjective?

Drag a label onto each word of a sentence. Each one is confirmed as it lands.

When to use it

A grammar lesson on word classes, straight after the teaching and before pupils label their own writing. A starter for a class that keeps mixing up adjectives and verbs. Practice for a mixed group working at different speeds, since each word is marked as it's placed.

What makes it this

Built on the Deconstruct the sentence generator with these changed. Everything else is the default.

  1. Components in this activity

In the builder: Sentences & components

  2. Mark words as they are tagged

A word turns green the moment the right component lands on it. Off, players only find out at the end.

Noun, verb or adjective? Six sentences to take apart

Every highlighted word is a noun, a verb or an adjective. Drag the right label onto each one — the words left plain are not part of the puzzle.

6 sentences

Why the example is built this way

  1. Three labels that never overlap.

A word can be a noun and the subject at the same time, and only one label is accepted per word. Offer labels where every word has exactly one right answer.

  2. Nothing tagged that a grammar book would argue over.

Leave out nouns used as modifiers and words ending in -ing. Little words like the and a stay untagged, which gives each sentence somewhere to rest.

  3. Vary the endings so none gives it away.

Mix regular and irregular past tenses with a present one, and singular nouns with plurals, so pupils can't sort by an -ed or an -s.

Build it yourself

  1. 1 Open the Deconstruct the sentence builder and fill in the Sentences & components tab.
  2. 2 Change the settings under What makes it this. Each one says where it is in the builder.
  3. 3 Share the link with your players, or embed the activity in your own site.

Or skip the building: copy this example and swap in your own content.
