Let them practise on their own Reorder

Sentence builder

Shuffled words, dragged back into the one order that is grammatical. Each sentence is checked on its own.

When to use it

An English or language lesson on word order: questions, adjective order, phrasal verbs. Homework for learners who can read a sentence but still build it in the order of their first language. A starter at the top of a grammar lesson, one sentence for each rule you're about to teach.

What makes it this

Built on the Reorder generator with these changed. Everything else is the default.

  1. Long sequences may wrap

A left-to-right sequence continues on the next row instead of scrolling sideways; the cards-per-row cap decides where it breaks.

  2. Players hand in their answer

Off, the answer is checked as it is made, with no submit button.

Sentence builder: put the words in order

Six English sentences, cut up and shuffled. Drag the words into order — there are no capitals and no full stops to give the ends away — then press Check. The heading over each one says which rule it is about.

6 sequences

Why the example is built this way

  1. Pick sentences with only one right order.

Only the order you typed is accepted, so a time phrase that could move or a comparison that reads both ways marks a correct answer wrong. Avoid repeated words too: two identical cards can't be told apart.

  2. No capitals and no full stops.

A capital marks the first word and a question mark the last, which gives away the ends of the puzzle. Name the grammar point in each sentence's heading instead.

  3. Each sentence is handed in, not lit up.

Without Players hand in their answer, a sentence turns green the moment it comes right, so learners nudge words until it lights. With it, each sentence gets its own Check button and the order becomes a decision.

Build it yourself

  1. 1 Open the Reorder builder and fill in the Sequences & cards tab.
  2. 2 Change the settings under What makes it this. Each one says where it is in the builder.
  3. 3 Share the link with your players, or embed the activity in your own site.

Or skip the building: copy this example and swap in your own content.
