First sums with a secret message
Seven little sums with no number bigger than 5. Every answer is a letter, and together they spell a short sentence.
When to use it
The first weeks of adding and taking away, when a class can count to ten but a whole page of sums is still a lot. A short task at the maths table, or the last five minutes of the day with the message as the reward.

Why the example is built this way

No number bigger than 5.
Under Maths level, the biggest number is 5 and only plus and minus are switched on. Two numbers up to 5 can still add up to 10, so the answers run from 0 to 10.

A short sentence, not a long one.
No two sums share an answer, so answers from 0 to 10 leave room for eleven letters at most. "I can add" uses seven, which is plenty for a first go.

Green the moment it is right.
Each sum turns green as soon as the right answer lands on it, so a child who is not sure yet finds out straight away instead of at the end.
