Send them on a trail Maze

Maze in the dark

They see only the corridors they have walked. The questions are gates, and the way through has to be found.

When to use it

The end of a history or science unit, revised in the order it was taught and walked like a museum after dark. A reward lesson where taking your time is the point. A quiet station at an open evening, where one visitor at a time maps the way through.

What makes it this

Built on the Maze generator with these changed. Everything else is the default.

  1. What players see

The whole maze, or only the cells they have been next to — a harder maze that has to be explored.

In the builder: How it plays › General

  2. Sections

How big each section of maze between two halls is — and so how far a wrong door walks you before the wall.

    In the builder: The questions

After hours at the museum: eleven galleries in the dark

The lights are out and you can only see what your torch has already been next to. Eleven galleries, one question in each, and the right answer is the door that carries on. Map it as you go — nothing here will show you the way.

11 questions

Why the example is built this way

  1. Eleven galleries, in the order of the story.

The halls stand along the path in the order you write the questions, so the walk can follow the timeline. Put yours in the order the topic unfolds.

  2. A large maze, and no shortcut.

With Sections set to Large, a wrong turn in the dark is a real walk back. Offer a shortcut to the next hall stays off, because it would lead players through corridors they have never seen.

  3. Only five seconds shut after a dead end.

Finding the way back through the dark already costs a wrong door something. Doors shut for 15 seconds would punish the same mistake twice, so 5 is enough.

Build it yourself

  1. 1 Open the Maze builder and fill in the The questions tab.
  2. 2 Change the settings under What makes it this. Each one says where it is in the builder.
  3. 3 Share the link with your players, or embed the activity in your own site.

Or skip the building: copy this example and swap in your own content.
