Start from a picture Name them all

Recall from a picture

A picture sets the scene and empty slots wait: the colours of the rainbow, the parts of a cell, the countries on a map.

When to use it

A primary class recalling a list they've been taught, like the planets or the continents. The end of a science topic, with a diagram of a cell or a flower on the board. A two-minute starter that shows at once which names the class still can't reach.

What makes it this

Built on the Name them all generator with these changed. Everything else is the default.

  1. An empty slot shows

Nothing is the classic. The length and the first letter are worked out when you save; the hint is the one you wrote on the name.

The seven colours of the rainbow, in two minutes

There is the rainbow — now name its seven colours. Type a colour and it drops into a slot the moment it matches; every slot already shows the letter its colour starts with. Two minutes on the clock, and the ones you miss are marked at the end.

7 names to recall

Why the example is built this way

  1. A list that's true without the picture.

The picture sets the scene; it isn't the answer key. Pick a fixed, taught list rather than everything you can see, so the answers still hold whatever the picture shows.

  2. The first letter on every slot.

With An empty slot shows set to First letter, a child stuck on a name is asked to remember it, not guess it. Show the missed names at the end then makes the one they missed the lesson.

  3. Two minutes on the clock, not ten.

A new list of this type starts with ten minutes. A short list needs only enough time for a young typist to find the letters, not a long silence after the last name.

Build it yourself

  1. 1 Open the Name them all builder and fill in the The list tab.
  2. 2 Change the settings under What makes it this. Each one says where it is in the builder.
  3. 3 Share the link with your players, or embed the activity in your own site.

Or skip the building: copy this example and swap in your own content.
