Science fair logic puzzle
Four pupils, four projects, four time slots. Seven clues, one answer, worked out one cross at a time on the grid.
When to use it
A reasoning lesson that needs no subject knowledge, so the whole class starts level. A starter where pairs talk each step through before they mark it. The early finishers' table, for pupils who want a puzzle that takes a while.
What makes it this
Built on the Logic puzzle generator with these changed. Everything else is the default.
- Clues: Written for me
Written for you from the grid, never typed. Clues are added until the solver closes the grid by deduction alone, then taken out one at a time and kept only if the grid stalls without them — so every set is proved to have exactly one answer.

- Categories & items
Ordered — the items have an order (prices, times, a finishing order). Unlocks before, right-before and distance clues.

- Players can ask for the next step
The grid places the next mark it can prove and says why. Free and unlimited; the results count how many were taken.

Why the example is built this way
-
The clues are written for you, and checked.
Under Clues, Written for me turns the pairs you place on the grid into a clue set and keeps only the clues the grid cannot be solved without. Every set has exactly one answer, so nobody is marked wrong for a solution the clues also allowed.
-
Time is the one category with an order.
Marking Time as ordered lets a clue say who presents before whom. The stands are colours rather than prizes on purpose: “Bronze comes before Silver” reads like a ranking, and a first puzzle should have only one thing in it that has an order.
-
Stuck is allowed.
With Players can ask for the next step on, the grid places the next mark it can prove and says which clue proves it. It is on by default, and with a first logic grid it is the difference between giving up and learning how the next step is found.
Build it yourself
- 1 Open the Logic puzzle builder and fill in the Story, items & grid tab.
- 2 Change the settings under What makes it this. Each one says where it is in the builder.
- 3 Share the link with your players, or embed the activity in your own site.
Or skip the building: copy this example and swap in your own content.
