Let them practise on their own Categorize

Sort it into boxes

Each card is confirmed the moment it lands, so a mistake gets corrected while they still remember why they made it.

When to use it

Straight after teaching a classification, such as states of matter, habitats or types of rock. A station in a carousel lesson where pupils work without you. Catching a misconception early, before it turns up in their written work.

What makes it this

Built on the Categorize generator with these changed. Everything else is the default.

  1. Confirm each card as it lands

Players see straight away whether a dropped card is in the right category.

Solid, liquid or gas? Sorting at room temperature

Eighteen everyday materials, as they are at room temperature. Carry each card into the box where it belongs — a card in the right box turns green and settles there.

18 cards

Why the example is built this way

  1. Every card belongs in exactly one box.

State the condition the sort depends on, like room temperature, and leave out anything that could defensibly go in two boxes. A card that is only sometimes right starts an argument, not a lesson.

  2. One card that looks like a trap.

Put in one card that seems to belong with its neighbours but doesn't. It's the misconception worth catching, and it gets caught the moment the card is dropped.

  3. Feedback per card, not per box.

With Confirm each card as it lands on, a right card turns green and stays put while a wrong one shakes. A whole-box check says nothing until a box is complete, which a young learner can't act on.

Build it yourself

  1. 1 Open the Categorize builder and fill in the Categories & cards tab.
  2. 2 Change the settings under What makes it this. Each one says where it is in the builder.
  3. 3 Share the link with your players, or embed the activity in your own site.

Or skip the building: copy this example and swap in your own content.
