Mini sudoku

A 4 × 4 grid with one solution, and each number confirmed as it goes in. Sudoku for ages five and up.

When to use it

A first taste of logic for five- and six-year-olds, solved together on the board before they try alone. A quiet table activity during maths work on the numbers to four. The early finishers' corner, for a child who wants a puzzle that is done in a few minutes.

What makes it this

Built on the Sudoku generator with these changed. Everything else is the default.

First sudoku: a 4 × 4 to start on

Every row, every column and every 2 × 2 box has to hold 1, 2, 3 and 4 — each of them exactly once. Tap an empty square, then tap a number. Start where a row or a box is nearly full.

Why the example is built this way

  1. Four by four, the smallest board there is.

    Choose 4 × 4 under Board size. The numbers only go up to four, so a young child can keep the whole rule in mind, and there is no difficulty to set at this size.

  2. Every right square turns green at once.

    With Mark parts as they are answered on, a correct number is confirmed as it goes in rather than only when the board is full. For a five-year-old, that's the difference between a puzzle and a test.

  3. Say the rule once, before they start.

    A child who has never met a sudoku needs it put in a sentence: every row, column and box holds each number once. Turn on Show the name and instructions to players and write it there.
