Picture–word pairs

One card shows the picture, its partner the word. First vocabulary, in any language you type.

When to use it

The first weeks of a new language, when a topic's words need to stick to what they mean. A starter for pupils learning English as an additional language. A quick review of topic words before a reading task, so the text doesn't stop them at every noun.

Eight fruits: match the picture to its word

Turn over two cards to find a fruit and the English word for it. Every pair is one picture and one word, never two pictures — and a pair you find leaves the board, so there is less to remember each time.

8 pairs

Why the example is built this way

  1. Square cards for square pictures.

A picture fills its card and is cropped to fit, so on the default wide card a square drawing loses its top and bottom. Set Card shape to 1:1 and the whole drawing shows; short words fit either way.

  2. Things with only one name.

The game teaches that this picture is called this word, so leave out anything people name two or three ways. Pick things that look different at a glance, too, since the cards shrink to fit the board.

  3. Four seconds for a wrong pair, not two.

How long a wrong pair stays up is the only chance to read what was under both cards. Two seconds is enough to notice a picture, not to read a word you're still learning.

Build it yourself

  1. 1 Open the Memory builder and fill in the Pairs & cards tab.
  2. 2 Change the settings under What makes it this. Each one says where it is in the builder.
  3. 3 Share the link with your players, or embed the activity in your own site.

Or skip the building: copy this example and swap in your own content.
