Definition bingo
You read out the meaning and they find the word. No numbers on the squares, so the only way to play is to listen.
When to use it
Checking key terms at the end of a topic, when recognising a word isn't the same as knowing what it means. A starter before an exam where definitions carry marks. A language lesson where you read out the meaning and the class has to find the word.
What makes it this
Built on the Bingo generator with these changed. Everything else is the default.
- Number the cards Off
In the builder: How it plays › Cards & layout
How a round runs
- 1 Open the host console from your dashboard, or with “Run the bingo” in the builder, and open registration.
- 2 Share the play link, its QR code or a classroom PIN. Players join with a first name and wait.
- 3 Start the round. Every player is dealt a different card.
- 4 Open a pattern to play for. Until one is open, nobody can win.
- 5 Draw and read out each call. Claims are checked, and the next pattern is yours to open.

Your teacher reads out a meaning, not the word. Work out which term on your card it describes, and tap that square. Top row first, then the bottom row, then the whole card.

Why the example is built this way
-
Why the numbers come off.
With Number the cards on, the number on a square matches the number shown beside the clue, and the class soon stops listening to the definitions. The host console still shows which word each clue belongs to.
-
Each clue fits exactly one term.
A definition that is true of two squares costs someone a fair claim. Add the detail that separates close pairs, and don't define a term using another word from the same list.
-
Twelve squares, because a meaning takes time.
Hearing a definition and thinking it through takes longer than hearing a word, so a four-by-three card keeps the full card to one starter. The top and bottom rows share no squares, so those rounds stay separate.
Build it yourself
- 1 Open the Bingo builder and fill in the Items on the cards tab.
- 2 Change the settings under What makes it this. Each one says where it is in the builder.
- 3 Share the link with your players, or embed the activity in your own site.
Or skip the building: copy this example and swap in your own content.
More with the Bingo
Classroom bingo
You call, they play on their own screens, and every card is different. Three rounds to win: corners, a row, the full card.
Find someone who…
Nobody calls anything. People mark their own squares as they meet each other, and can see how the room is doing.
Event bingo with prizes
The meeting is the caller. Three prized patterns, claims judged for you, and a draw when two people win at once.
